SOH - Talks & Ideas
Video Provocations
Sydney Opera House Talks & Ideas program showcases big ideas and extraordinary people.
To mark the fifth year of collection of online recordings the SOH team asked Studio Hackett to create a suite of short provocations with general themed questions or statements related to Talks & Ideas as a whole. They will be rolled out on our Youtube channel, with capacity for in-event screening and social media promotion.
I’ve teamed up with the one and only wordsmith Alex Reszelska, to develop a unique idea and directions.
.The Concept
“Good artists copy, great artists steal.”
— Pablo Picasso
In the modern world creativity is the original open-source code. All cultural artefacts that are being produced are automatically open to reappropriation. Even more, this act of reappropriation is the rebirth of an old idea into a new, multilayered form. This is what the remix culture is all about.
These provocations are in the style of YouTube mashup films, a social media genre based on the remix culture. Here it should be thought of as a method of quotation, citation and commentary; as a form of pastiche, parody or homage; as a means of picking our way through the media-saturated labyrinth. This art form actually dates back to the 1920s and has often celebrated, what the mass media theorist Francesca Coppa describes as: a distinctly female way of seeing.
Each provocation is a sequence of smartly edited statements or words taken from different public figures’ speeches (politicians, activists, actors) that altogether convey an unexpected message. They are dangerous and shareable (in accordance with satire and ‘fair use’). In the relatively light and fun way we can discuss issues of bigger importance like internet privacy, online feminism, global refugee crisis or environmental catastrophe. The irony is that the message being ‘spoken’ would often sit in opposition to the beliefs of those making the comment.
The script content is based on a simple sequence:
Visual hook ---- Mashup Quotes ---- Broad genre (typographic) ---- Logo
The proposed scripts are short, punchy and light.
.The Treatment
The original treatment was based on Incomprehensible & Rebellious creative route. It takes its origins from vintage collages, digital processing errors and rebellious punk zines. Often primitively or casually produced, they remind us of school assignments someone did in the hallway right before walking through the door. I created an avant-garde aesthetic that is deliciously grungy and emphasizes the authenticity of the speakers content and ideas.
The aesthetics challenges design norms as the words challenges the meaning of statements. These artfully distressed combinations of text and images will lay a perfect foundation for a social and political commentary.
